Sighting in your rifle
Part of getting ready for the big game of hunting whitetail deer is fine tuning your equipment. Some hunters like to use open sights, some like the power variation scopes, some like the quick point dot or a laser beam system. There is as much variety in rifle scopes as there are hunters.
Sighting in your rifle requires 4 easy steps.
First step: Find a good solid shooting stand that will allow you to hold your rifle in a steady position. Set up your target at approximately 25 yards, (check the ammunition ballistics) - this is the cross point where the bullet starts going over the line of sight. Aim at the bullseye and shoot three rounds.
Second step: Inspect the target and mark the centre of the three shot grouping.
Third step: Set up your rifle on the stand using clamps or something that will hold it very steady, while making sure the sights are pointing at the same spot you were aiming at when you did the shooting.
Fourth step: The rifle should be fixed at this point so it doesn't move. Now, adjust the crosshair, laser beam or whatever equipment you are using so it aims directly in the centre of the three shot grouping; (Important: without moving the rifle). That is exactly where your rifle's bullets hit when you did the three shot grouping.
Your rifle will now aim where the bullet hit when you squeezed the trigger.
I hope this can help some of you hunters out there that may have missed the huge buck of a lifetime, because you were not prepared for the hunt. Remember, sighting in your rifle will give you the confidence you need when that monster whitetail buck makes his magical appearance.
